These registries are not interoperable. A buyer seeking to compare credits across registries must conduct separate due diligence on each system's methodology and audit requirements.
Credit Types and Price Ranges
Credit prices vary substantially by credit type, geography, and quality attributes. Based on 2024 market data, indicative price ranges are:
- Land-based collection credits: $50–$120 per tonne. The most abundant credit type; priced lower due to lower marginal environmental benefit relative to coastal or ocean-adjacent collection.
- Collection and mechanical recycling: $120–$220 per tonne. The premium reflects a demonstrable circular economy outcome — collected material enters a recognised recycling stream and produces secondary material displacing virgin plastic production.
- Ocean-bound plastic (OBP): $200–$450 per tonne. The market's highest-value tier. OBP credits certify collection from within 50 km of a coastline or waterway connected to the ocean. Price premiums reflect both the environmental impact of preventing marine pollution and strong social co-benefits — typically formalisation of waste picker income, health improvements, and community development programmes.
- Chemical recycling credits: $180–$350 per tonne. An emerging category covering pyrolysis, gasification, and solvolysis pathways. Prices reflect both processing cost premiums and ongoing methodological scrutiny around lifecycle emissions accounting.
Price Drivers
Several factors shift prices within and between these ranges. Geography is the primary structural driver: projects in high-leakage coastal zones command consistent premiums. The verification standard applied influences buyer confidence and willingness to pay — Verra-certified credits typically trade above uncertified or proprietary-standard equivalents. Quantified co-benefits attract premium buyers with social sustainability mandates seeking credits that satisfy both environmental and ESG criteria. Vintage (the year of credit issuance) also affects price; older credits typically discount as buyers prefer credits representing recent impact.
Trading Mechanisms
The market remains predominantly over-the-counter (OTC). Most transactions are bilateral agreements negotiated directly between project developers and buyers, often facilitated by specialist brokers including South Pole, ClimeCo, and Verra-accredited intermediaries. Several platforms — including rePurpose Global's marketplace and Plastic Bank's enterprise portal — operate proprietary exchange mechanisms, but these serve captive buyer pools and are not interoperable with the broader market.

Buyers and sellers operate with significant information asymmetry.
