How plastic credits are priced: what drives market value

Plastic credit prices range from $50 to over $450 per tonne, but this spread is not arbitrary. Four structural factors — credit type, certification standard, co-benefits, and supply scarcity — determine where any given credit settles in the market.

The building blocks of plastic credit price

Plastic credit prices emerge from bilateral negotiations shaped by several intersecting factors, not from a central exchange or published benchmark. At the most basic level, the price floor for any credit is the cost of collection plus verification, minus revenue the project generates by selling recovered material to recyclers. Above that floor, quality and scarcity premiums determine where individual credits settle. The four primary price drivers are: credit type and waste stream geography, certification standard and verification rigour, quantified co-benefits, and supply scarcity relative to demand in specific credit categories.

Unlike carbon markets — where exchanges such as CBL and ACX publish daily settlement prices — plastic credit prices are rarely disclosed publicly. The most comprehensive public price data comes from the Ecosystem Marketplace Plastic Credits Annual Report, which aggregates self-reported transaction data annually. Buyers operating only from broker quotes face significant information asymmetry; understanding the structural drivers of price is a necessary input for defensible procurement decisions.

Credit type and geography as the dominant price signal

The single most powerful determinant of plastic credit price is the type of waste stream the credit represents, which is tightly linked to geography. Land-based collection credits from projects in countries with existing formal waste management infrastructure command the lowest prices — typically $50 to $120 per tonne — because additionality is harder to establish and the environmental urgency is less acute. Ocean-bound plastic credits, from coastal or riverine collection in low-income countries without formal waste management, command $200 to $450 per tonne, reflecting both strong additionality and a communicable marine pollution narrative that buyers can translate into product claims. Chemical recycling credits occupy a middle-to-upper tier at $180 to $350 per tonne, priced above mechanical recycling equivalents ($120 to $220) to account for higher processing costs and the treatment of difficult-to-recycle waste streams.

Within these broad bands, geography matters at the project level. Credits from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Vietnam — countries ranked among the largest contributors to ocean plastic pollution — carry geographic premiums reflecting the urgency of marine leakage prevention in those contexts. Credits from West African projects, where formal waste management is even less developed, are increasingly commanding similar premiums as buyers recognise the additionality case. Vintage also matters: credits from the most recent annual monitoring period typically trade at a premium over older vintages, since buyers prefer to match the credit year to their own reporting period.

Certification and co-benefits as price multipliers

The certification standard governing a credit is a significant secondary price driver. Credits verified under Verra's Plastic Waste Reduction Standard with an accredited Validation/Verification Body (VVB) command a transparency premium over credits certified under proprietary or broker-only frameworks. Buyers who access Verra-registered credits can independently view the public registry, verify the retirement record, and access project documentation — reducing due diligence cost and increasing confidence in the claim's legal defensibility under frameworks like the EU Green Claims Directive.

Co-benefits add further price differentiation. Credits from projects that formally document waste picker employment, measurable income improvements, and social indicators attract buyers with ESG mandates that extend beyond environmental metrics. Both rePurpose Global and Plastic Bank have demonstrated that quantified social co-benefits add $50 to $150 per tonne above the baseline for equivalent credit types. Gender-inclusive programmes offering structured pathways for female waste collectors attract premium interest from corporate buyers aligned with SDG 5. The practical implication for buyers is that the cheapest credits are rarely the most appropriate for sustainability disclosures that face stakeholder scrutiny: investing in higher-quality, better-documented credits reduces greenwashing and regulatory risk.
